The Jos-born Nigerian international marksman has not featured at all for the Foxes in the league this season and is behind the likes of Jamie Vardy, Islam Slimani, Shinji Okazaki and fellow countryman Kelechi Iheanacho in the pecking order.
Even if used as a winger, Musa faces stiff competition from Riyad Mahrez, Marc Albrighton and Demarai Gray.
And with the World Cup now only six-months away, the retired Okoronkwo has urged former CSKA Moscow star Musa, 25, to think of his future and consider a return to playing in the Russian league.
"I talked with Ahmed Musa and I tried to convince him that returning to Russia would be the right step," Okoronkwo told Vanguard.
"Take John Obi Mikel for example. He correctly did that, he left Chelsea for China. It's better to play there than to sit on the bench.
"At Leicester, he sits on the bench. Before the World Cup, he needs a team that he knows well, and after the tournament you will be able to think about other options.
"Especially CSKA Moscow, they need a central striker now."
Okoronkwo, a former Wolves player, ended his own career at Russian side Rostov.
In a recent comment, Leicester boss Claude Puel offered little to suggest that the situation will change.
"For me he is a good player with quality. He is not a striker, he is a winger left or right. He can take space with good penetration. In training, he always gives a positive attitude and works hard.
"We have a lot of players in the same position and sometimes it is tough and difficult for them and the staff to make a choice and give them more game time, like Musa."
